Style is power. What does this mean?
When I think about fashion, I think excitement, intrigue, and personal expression. I think high fashion magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar showing us what’s hot and what’s not. The deeper meaning underneath the When you look good you feel good facade is more than a fleeting feeling of confidence, though — it’s a mindset — one that can turn into a commanding, influential lifestyle.
And it got me thinking…
Every time I feel powerless, fashion, I’m realizing, has become my means of control. I can’t control my toddler’s tantrums, but I can control how I respond. I can’t control the way other people think of me, but I can control how I show up for them.
When I’m dressed how I want to dress — be it an oversize button down with leggings or extravagant duster and jeans, I exude an attitude. I feel the opposite of powerless. I feel calm, in control, and motivated to do better.
Because style, when done right, can become your weapon to handle tough conversations or manage high-stress situations. It can be your gateway to persuading the client you’re trying to land.
From parenthood and marriage to friendships and career, being out of control in your appearance leads to feeling out of control in your life. If you don’t dress the part, you’re denying yourself the ability to fully show up as you. And when you do that, you give permission to everyone paying attention to you to do the same.
Happy Friday, fashion crowd. Thank you for reading.
Keep being you. A better dressed you.
