Proof That Having a Signature Style Attracts *Your People*

It's not (really) about what you wear, but who you attract

Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe.

I just wrapped up a personal branding course thanks to the fabulous and uber inspiring personal branding experts Jessica Zweig, Aleksa, and Nora. Highly, highly recommend if you are a creative entrepreneur looking to gain clarity around your brand’s messaging, mission, and target market.

Kate Newey, one of the members I met through the course, has brilliantly branded herself as the “Hat and Heels REALTOR®” in an effort to (1) Be herself, and (2) Attract the right-for-her clients.

May this Q+A serve as inspiration to find your unique-to-you signature style, because frankly, it matters.

You have branded yourself as the #hatandheelsrealtor. I love it. Why that particular look, and how did you come up with it?

I’ve always loved wearing baseball hats, and I’ve always loved wearing high heels. They’ve forever felt mutually exclusive in society, and there was a lot of fear around not being “fashionable” with my particular vibe of blending the traditionally feminine archetype of heels and more sporty vibe of baseball hats. I grew up with the Spice Girls, to which I ALWAYS felt a strong connection to both Posh Spice AND Sporty Spice.

Then one day it hit me: Rock them both. “Hats and heels” became a total vibe for me when I decided to unapologetically define myself in the real estate industry. I entered this space after a 15+ year career in the fitness industry, and I figured why not be 100% me?! I loved embodying both looks: Sometimes separately, and sometimes together as a fusion of two opposites. You wouldn’t think they could work together, not un-like peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, but turns out it can work.

So I began to style it in public without limitation, and soon became the self-proclaimed #hatandheelsrealtor when it came time to define my brand. Love it or hate it, that’s me, baby!

How does that specific image attract the right-for-you clients?

When you show up as your authentic self, you attract your people. When I got into real estate, I told myself I wanted to show up and attract the type of clients who wanted to work with me. While I’ve built, designed, and lived in luxury homes in the past, I’ve never felt like the cookie cutter stereotype of what I perceived as a “luxury” real estate agent.

I’m not perfect, and I don’t claim to be. But I’m real, I’m approachable, and I care about my clients because I care about relationships and helping people. I’ve felt a call to serve my entire life, and I’ve always worked jobs & built businesses in service of others. I will continue to do so while remaining true to myself in the process to best serve my clients.

You clearly understand the power of a signature style. What advice do you have for business women trying to stand out from the crowd with their look?

My advice would be to listen to your own intuition. Nobody else should have the power to define you: Drive your own narrative. Tell people who you are, because people want to know you! Get out of your own way and show up for YOURSELF first, and that will naturally attract others. That’s your gift to this world and your superpower, so use it and own it.

Ask yourself what feels good, what drives you, what inspires and motivates you, then lean into it 100%.

  • Exist with intention.

  • Thrive with purpose.

  • Strive to value service above self, and you’ll never go wrong.

You say you help your clients align their 3 homes — Mind + Body + Planet. What does that mean exactly, and how do you do it?

This question gives me chills because it speaks to the deepest mission I seek to fulfill as a human on Earth: To help others find and feel at home. We are given three homes in our lifetime: Our minds, our body, and this planet. While we can move anywhere on Earth, we are limited to exist and “live” 24/7 in our bodies and minds. Unfortunately, we aren’t always kind to our bodies and minds, and they can become very hostile, difficult places to be.

Through my experience as a yoga teacher, a personal trainer & fitness instructor, a Thai bodyworker, and real estate agent, I’ve found a connecting thread that aligns my passions to help serve others feel more aligned in the health and wealth of our three homes. It is my life’s mission to help others find balance, happiness, and peace among all three.

Because this is a newsletter all about improving mindset, what do you do every day to keep your mental health spirits up?

I remind myself that our minds create our reality. We can form attachments, judgements, and entire belief systems and core values based entirely off our own thoughts.

I’ll quote a favorite song lyric that I danced to in high school: “What have you done today to make you feel proud?” When I remind myself that it’s not about me, but about serving others and showing up with love, I’m always redirected to a place where I can improve my mindset and show up as the best possible human I can be in that moment.

And beauties, you never know when a fleeting moment for you will translate to a lifetime of change and impact for someone else. So show up and be yourself, because whether or not you know it yet, the world needs your type of magic.

This is Kate.

If you haven’t found your signature style yet, find it! It’s really what you gravitate toward in terms of getting dressed. Don’t overthink it. My signature style is red lipstick and oversize sunglasses. The point is to pick something that will make you instantly recognizable (and memorable), and most of all, is completely representative of YOU.
