Pride is For Everyone
Because this is Pride month, I thought a reminder on why we celebrate this fabulous movement to be fitting, seeing as how it connects deeply with mental health (and colorful fashion!)
I’ve heard people refer to Pride parades (and the people participating in them) as “freak shows.” And to those people, I want to kindly remind you that these are people who have faced severe inequality, violence, mistreatment, and even torture — for simply being who they are. These are people who have been afraid (or are still afraid) to dress how they want to dress, love who they want to love, and think how they want to think.
To those people, I want to ask:
How would you feel if you had to hide the beautiful person you are, inside and out, every fucking day, out of fear of being bullied or abused?
We all deserve to feel comfortable in our skin. People are people. Please recognize this.
While I can’t relate to the trauma someone part of the LGBTQIA+ community has endured, I have to assume it’s the absolute worst feeling in the world. To feel like you have to hide who you are, what you believe in, how you want to dress and act, and who you love? To those people I want to say I applaud you for continuing to fight for your rights as a human being. I am with you.
This is Who I Am
In InStyle’s “Pride and Joy” piece featuring comedian and actress Wanda Sykes, she had this to say on coming out:
“This is who I am. Why am I trying to be something else? It’s making me miserable, and I deserve to be happy.”
Can’t we all relate to that on some level? At one time or another, we have made ourselves smaller to fit in. We’ve lied about who we are or where we came from out of fear of being disliked.
And it got me thinking…
Pride isn’t just a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community — it’s a celebration of anyone who has ever felt outcasted for simply being who they are — and that’s all of us.
