How To Wear A Kimono in the Winter
A style staple, a showpiece, a masterpiece: The Kimono Robe
The kimono robe is the epitome of luxury. It is representative of the lifestyle every fashion enthusiast aspires to lead, from her career to her home life and beyond.
A lot of people question, “Why the kimono?” when asking about my clothing label.
Considering it is my signature piece offered, I thought I would explain why here, including the multitude of ways one can wear this fabulous forever garment.
In preparation of launching VALT, one of our homework assignments was to go in our closets and see what we have the most of, including what styles, fabrics and prints we tend to gravitate toward.
Wear it under a turtleneck for maximum warmth and chicness. Top it off with a smokey eye for extra sex appeal.
For me, it was jumpsuits and kimonos. I loved the idea of starting a brand of one-piece-wonders, and especially loved the ease of the kimono’s wear and drama of the draping — like a mysterious cape, a sort of feminine fashion armor.
While the reasons why I gravitate toward kimonos are endless, its style versatility tops the list.
You can be a Vogue editor in a kimono robe. You can be a 70s’ dancing queen. You can be a savvy businesswoman barking orders at your male counterparts, an elegant lady who lunches, or cool girl next door.
You can be whoever you want to be.
Wear it classic, over jeans and a t-shirt. Add a scarf for extra style and warmth.
A little Kimono History
I didn’t dive into the history of the kimono until recently, and upon doing so I’ve fallen even more in love with it.
According to Japanese culture, the kimono is a symbol of longevity and good fortune. Designs and special motifs were (and are) placed on kimonos to indicate “virtues or attributes of the wearer,” bestowing good fortune on the wearer whether they are wearing it for a wedding or other special occasion.
Stand out from the sea of sparkles and Christmas sweaters, and wear it as a dress to your holiday party.
When you’re wearing a long, lustrous kimono robe, you feel completely calm yet authoritative.
A kimono robe can be a slinky, sexy number worn by itself, a duster worn over jeans and a vintage tee, or a cool jacket atop a dress or two-piece set.
Wear it as a long cardigan with a belt, a la Chrissy Teigen.
No matter how you wear yours, know that the kimono robe is a showpiece, and it is meant to be seen, just like you.
Thank you for reading. Have a fabulous weekend.
Be you.
